How to Stay Fit Through the Holidays

By November 25, 2017 No Comments

With so many holiday events revolving around food and cocktails, it’s easy to add on the extra pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.  However, you shouldn’t let the holiday season cause you to regress. Instead, you should still continue to progress. Continue reading to find out how to do this and stay fit during the holidays.

Stick to a Routine as Best You Can – Having a solid plan in place, even if you veer off track a little, is a great strategy to stay healthy through the season. Get active at least four times a week, and include protein with your breakfast — both will give your metabolism a boost that lasts all day.  It’s much easier to follow your goal of eating properly when you set it and start working toward it the week before. The same goes for goals concerning staying active. Since the holidays often mean either busy days and nights, or relaxing days and nights, it’s beneficial to set a reminder for yourself to get up and move. Even just getting up off of the couch where you were enjoying some small talk with family, or stepping away from the bar where you’re catching up with old friends, will add to your exercise goals for the day and boost your metabolism.

Bring Healthy Treats to the Party – The minute someone invites you to a gathering, offer to bring a dish. While this may not be an option for every gathering, it’s always worth offering. This way you know the menu will include at least one waist-friendly dish. It’s easy to make healthy swaps when baking, such as using coconut oil instead of butter, natural sugars or stevia instead of sugar, and flour alternatives such as quinoa or almond flour.

Hydrate – It’s a commonly known fact that drinking enough water is essential to both weight loss and health in general. It’s even more important during the holiday season. Going out to holiday parties and indulging in alcoholic beverages seem to be trends during the holidays. Your fitness journey can either be more or less unaffected by these trends, or it could falter because of these trends. Hydrating before going out and drinking is a great way to ensure that your journey follows the unaffected route.

Find Balance – Remember this time of year is all about enjoying yourself with friends and family. Don’t deprive yourself of the things you love most about the season. Just be sure to stay on track during the days before and after the party. When you stick to a healthy lifestyle and stay consistent, you have wiggle room for a little indulgence here and there.
