There are many branches of yoga. All yoga styles can help balance your body, mind, and spirit, but they achieve it in various ways. Some yoga styles are intense and vigorous. Others are relaxing and meditative. No matter which type you choose, yoga is a great way to stretch and strengthen your body, focus your mind, and relax your spirit.

1. Low impact, beginner-friendly exercise
Unfortunately, most people associate exercise with punishment. Running on the treadmill is something you do because you “ate too much and need to burn it off.” This attitude is unhealthy and unnecessary. Yoga is a great way to teach yourself that exercise is about treating your body (not torturing it).
2. Improve your mood and help to treat depression
Meditation is a regular part of any yoga class and has been proven to improve mood and even treat depression. Questions remain about exactly how yoga works to improve mood, but preliminary evidence suggests its benefit is similar to that of exercise and relaxation techniques. In a German study published in 2005, two groups were asked to report how they felt over a three-month period. Group on participated in two 90-minute yoga classes over the three months while others carried on with normal activities. At the end of three months, women in the yoga group reported improvements in emotional health including: less depression, less anxiety, better energy, less fatigue, and overall better well-being.
3. MAJOR STRESS RELIEVER
Yoga is all about letting go of your worries and focusing on the now, so it should come as no surprise that the activity relieves stress. But research has shown that yoga does more than give you a relaxing break from daily life: It can actually change your gene expression. According to a paper published in 2017, yoga impedes the expression of genes that cause inflammation, which is linked to stress and certain diseases. So if you ever feel especially relaxed after a yoga session, that feeling may go even deeper than you realize.
4. It helps you get a better night’s sleep.
In our stressful world if there is any commodity that is in short supply, it has to be a good night’s sleep. The more stressed we are, the harder it can be to fall asleep at night – or get back to sleep if we wake up worrying. The National Sleep Foundation suggests that yoga can help you sleep better, especially if you suffer from insomnia.
5. No need for equipment
Runners need running shoes, and gyms require memberships, but yoga actually requires relatively little in the way of equipment. Most studios advise that you wear shorts or leggings with a t-shirt, and bare feet. The only thing you really need is a yoga mat. The great news is, you don’t need your own mat to get started. Most studios will be happy to lend mats to new students who want to give yoga a try.
