If you haven’t tried surfing yet, there are many compelling reasons why you should. When you finally try it, you might even catch the surfing bug and continue to progress in the sport. Read the reasons below, and you’ll be compelled to surf.

Surfing is great exercise for the body

Surfing uses nearly every part of the body. When you’re first learning to surf, it’s common to “discover” muscles you never knew you had. While it helps provide muscle toning and strength, it is also an aerobic activity — which means you’re exercising the heart and lungs as well. Best of all, it’s one of those activities that doesn’t really feel like exercise; only afterwards do you realize it was a workout, and a very thorough one at that!

Surfing is an individual sport: while you can surf with others, have a great time with them, and enjoy their company, in the end, it’s just you and the wave. For some, surfing is like meditation, therapy, or religion. For others, it’s an opportunity to do something outside of their comfort zone, conquer their fears, and hone in on the power of their own minds. Whatever surfing turns out to be for you, it is likely to be much more than just the sum of its individual parts.


When you start to learn how to surf, it’s going to be hard. There will be times that you will be frustrated and overwhelmed, but these times will be humbling experiences as you wash out from time to time. If you practice enough and can persevere through these hard moments of surfing, then you’ll be rewarded with a sense of accomplishment. Hard work does pay off.

Everyone knows the stereotype about surfers, the laidback guys and girls with long hair, tan skin and a deep appreciation for the ocean. As far as stereotypes go, the typical surfer one isn’t all that bad. In reality, the culture is deeper and more obscure than that, but for the most part, the focus is on conservation of the ocean, enjoying the sport and sharing waves. Not a bad tradition at all.

Surfing may have an image of being a daring, dangerous sport where wipe-outs and injuries are common place. But that is not actually the case – there are only 2.2 injuries suffered per surfer for every 1,000 days they are in the water. As long as you get your equipment right and choose the right kind of board for your ability, you should be safe. When you are starting out it is best to choose a wider, thicker board that will help keep you afloat more easily and will also help you keep your balance for longer.

Surfing delivers that in bucket loads, bringing you into the world of fish, dolphins, seals and whales, as you explore and totally immersive yourself in their environment. It will also help you understand the environmental challenges facing the oceans, which can only be a good thing.
